Title: English Language Development (ELD) Coordinator
Division: Making Waves Academy
Reports To: Director of Academic Support Services
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Salary: $72,000-$82,000 +$12,000 Temporary Cost of Living Allowance and MWA Benefits. CalSTRS Retirement Eligible (During the Academic Year)
The English Language Development (ELD) Coordinator develops and implements differentiated plans to support Making Waves Academy’s English Language Learners (ELL). In this position, the ELD Coordinator is responsible for comprehensive progress monitoring and fidelity monitoring for the implementation of both the Middle School and Upper School ELD programs.

Leadership
- Utilize, refine, and implement the existing ELD Plan across MWA – serving 5th-12th grades.
- Play a lead role in annual ELPAC examinations and reclassification of ELL students.
- Develop and implement a plan for the fidelity and progress monitoring of the ELD Plan, as well as the use of agreed upon instructional classroom practices.
- Work closely with both the Middle School and Upper School Assistant Principal to discuss progress and effectiveness of implemented strategies.
- Lead Faculty professional development on cross curricular strategies to support English Language Learners, and collaborate with the Testing Coordinator and Faculty to administer annual ELPAC examinations.
- Attend and support WASC/LCAP meetings.
- Lead and facilitate ELAC meetings.
- Participate and contribute to the school wide Academic Intervention Services Team (AIS) in monitoring school wide academic progress.
- Communicate to parents of ELD students regarding academic progress. Communicate and engage with parents of ELD, RFEP, and LTEL students to discuss academic support and progress in ELD and content classes.
- Conduct RFEP monitoring as outlined by state law
- Produce data reports as needed on the progress of ELL students at MWA
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Making Waves Academy’s mission, core values, standards, competencies, and code of conduct outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Participate in the school community – attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and supporting student events, student clubs, and club advisors.
- Participate in required campus supervision duties every week, from Monday to Friday, with varying frequency depending on the semester's supervision assignment.
- This job operates in an indoor and outdoor school environment and routinely uses standard office/school equipment.
- Light/local travel may be required on occasion.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to move around campus, stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, phone, and keyboard.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
- Light to moderate lifting may be required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Linguistics, TESOL, or a closely related field and 3+ years experience directly teaching English Learners in diverse educational settings. Master's degree is preferred
- Teaching designated or integrated ELD. Deep understanding of second language acquisition theory and research. Proficiency in ELD instructional strategies and best practices. Experience with CA ELD State standards
- Experience in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data related to EL student progress and program effectiveness.
- Skill in designing and delivering engaging and impactful training to educators on ELD best practices
- Experience working with students and families from historically underserved communities
- Capacity to inspire and guide school staff in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for English Learners. Passion for ensuring equitable access and opportunities for ELs and the ability to articulate their needs effectively.
- Skill in building strong working relationships with teachers, administrators, parents, and community partners.
- Flexibility in understanding and implementing new state and federal guidelines related to English Learners.
- Understanding and respect for the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of English Learners and their families.
- Highly effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. While not required, fluency in Spanish will be a significant advantage in this role, allowing for broader engagement with our diverse campus community.
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
- Ability to adapt and align on school-related initiatives, and willingness to uphold and enforce school policies and procedures
- Comfortable learning and using the digital tools MWA uses, and willing to try out new technologies and work tools
- Professional orientation – appearance, communication, organization, and attitude
- Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis, COVID-19 vaccination, and/or other employment clearance
- Valid California Teaching Credential; CLAD/BCLAD preferred
