Salary:             $34.49 - $36.30/hr. and MWA Benefits

 

Summary

The Credit Recovery Specialist is responsible for providing academic support and guidance to high school students in our school's online learning programs, primarily utilizing the EdOptions Academy and Apex Learning platforms. This role is a combination of teacher, mentor, and coach, and focuses on helping students who have previously failed courses to recover credits and stay on track for graduation. The ideal candidate is highly skilled at building relationships, motivating disengaged learners, and using data to guide instruction.

Student Support & Facilitation 

  • Provide individualized and small-group academic support to students working on EdOptions Academy and/or Apex Learning courses across various subjects, e.g., Math, English, Science, Social Studies. 
  • Regularly track student progress, completion rates, and performance, identifying students who are struggling or falling behind.
  • Maintain consistent and proactive communication with students (and classroom teachers) regarding their progress, assignments, and any technical or academic challenges.
  • Assist students in troubleshooting basic technical issues related to accessing and navigating EdOptions Academy and/or Apex Learning courses.
  • Proctor online assessments as needed and ensure academic integrity within the online learning environment.
  • Adapt support strategies to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students.

Platform Management & Administration 

  • Assist with student enrollment in appropriate courses, ensuring alignment with academic pathways and graduation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, completion, and communication. Ensure accurate grades are transferred from EdOptions Academy or Apex Learning to PowerSchool when students complete a course, or at the end of the term.
  • Generate and analyze reports from the EdOptions Academy and/or Apex Learning platforms to inform instructional decisions and communicate student progress to relevant stakeholders.
  • Become a subject matter expert in the functionality and features of the EdOptions Academy and/or Apex Learning platforms to effectively support students and staff.

Collaboration & Communication 

  • Foster a positive learning environment and build strong, supportive relationships with students to motivate them and encourage ownership of their learning. Collaborate closely with classroom teachers, staff and administrators, and parents/guardians to ensure a cohesive and supportive learning experience for students.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the school's online learning program.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to online learning, blended learning, and EdOptions Academy and Apex Learning best practices.

Mission Alignment

  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Making Waves Academy’s mission, core values, standards, competencies, and code of conduct outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Participate in the school community – attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and supporting student events, student clubs, and club advisors.
  • Participate in required campus supervision duties every week, from Monday to Friday, with varying frequency depending on the semester's supervision assignment.

Work Environment

  • This job operates in an indoor and outdoor school environment and routinely uses standard office/school equipment. 

Physical Demands

  • The employee may be required to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time; lift and carry materials up to 30lbs.; reach overhead/bend; push/pull. Must possess the ability to use hands and fingers to operate computers, keyboards, etc.; must have the ability to view written materials, computer screens, and observe activities, ensuring students' safety; must hear and communicate clearly to interact with others. The employee should be able to move throughout the campus to effectively interact with students and staff.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and at least one year of prior teaching experience in a K-12 setting.
  • A CA Single Subject Teaching Credential  is a plus, but the ability to effectively manage a high school classroom is paramount.
  • Online learning platform experience desired ( Apex Learning and/or EdOptions Academy is highly preferred).

Skills and Abilities

  • Competent in using online learning platforms and technology to deliver instruction and monitor progress.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping all students achieve academic success. Exceptional ability to motivate and build rapport with students.
  • Strong classroom management skills and a proactive approach to student support. Capable of managing multiple students and their individualized learning plans efficiently. 
  • Ability to build strong, supportive relationships with students and communicate effectively with parents/guardians and colleagues. 
  • Ability to uphold and reinforce school policies and procedures. Professional orientation, including appearance and attitude, reinforcing a culture of excellence.

Licenses or Certificates 

  • Employment eligibility will include fingerprints/Live Scan, tuberculosis (TB) screening, and other employment clearance.
  • Annual Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit required.
  • Certificate of Clearance (COC), AED, CPR, and First Aid certification.
