Daily Rate: $296.70 and MWA Benefits
Summary
The primary role of Making Waves Academy’s Long-Term Substitute Teacher is to maintain the continuity of learning in the classroom during the absence of the regular teacher. This isn't just a day-to-day role; it's a strategic position designed to ensure classroom stability and make a real impact on student learning. As a teacher, your work centers on instruction, classroom management, and school-wide collaboration. The key outcomes of your efforts are student growth and a positive classroom culture.

Instruction & Assessment
- Outcome: Students consistently meet or exceed academic standards.
- Responsibilities:
- Plan and Deliver Lessons: Create and deliver effective, differentiated unit and lesson plans that challenge students and align with state standards (Common Core/CA).
- Assess and Provide Feedback: Use a mix of formative and summative assessments to gauge student learning and provide constructive feedback.
- Prepare Students for Success: Use assessments that prepare students for standardized tests and final exams.
- Outcome: A safe, structured, and respectful learning environment.
- Responsibilities:
- Manage the Classroom: Maintain an organized classroom and use school-defined behavior management techniques to ensure a safe and inclusive atmosphere.
- Ensure Safety: Serve as a mandated reporter and supervise students to ensure their safety at all times.
- Communicate Progress: Keep students, parents, and staff informed about academic progress, including participating in parent outreach events.
- Outcome: A collaborative, inclusive, and supportive school community.
- Responsibilities
- Build Relationships: Teach and build relationships with students and their families within our diverse school community.
- Collaborate: Work as a positive team player with colleagues and the wider community to ensure the best outcomes for students.
- Contribute to School Life: Participate in professional development. Demonstrate knowledge and support of Making Waves Academy’s mission, core values, standards, competencies, and code of conduct outlined in the Employee Handbook. Participate in the school community – attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and extracurricular activities. Participate in required campus supervision duties every week, from Monday to Friday, with varying frequency depending on the semester's supervision assignment.
- This job operates in an office and school environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to move around campus, stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, phone, and keyboard.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
- Light to moderate lifting may be required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing required
- Passion for the teaching field and/or interest in pursuing a teaching credential
- Organized, consistent, relationship-oriented, and proactive. Ability to create a structured and caring environment where students know what is expected and feel respected.
- Is a prepared and consistent communicator who creates a structured and predictable environment.
- Proficiency in Windows and Chromebook. Comfortable learning and using MWA's existing digital tools, e.g., PowerSchool, Canvas, Google Drive and Google Calendar, Khan Academy, Newsela, Zinc/Springboard. Experience using Slack and Zoom helpful. A willingness to try out and quickly learn new technologies and work tools as they are introduced.
- Is responsive, resilient, and resourceful. Has a strong plan but holds it loosely, ready to adjust to the reality of the classroom in real time.
- Willing to adopt and maintain a professional attitude and business dress code in accordance with school policy.
- Employment eligibility will include fingerprints/Live Scan, tuberculosis (TB) screening, and other employment clearance
- California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Certificate of Clearance (COC) required
