Supervises:     Part-time Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director
Salary:             $90,000-$100,000 + $12,000 Temporary Cost of Living Allowance and MWA Benefits

Position Summary
The role of the Athletic Director (AD) is to develop, implement, manage, and provide oversight of Making Waves Academy (MWA) interscholastic and middle school athletics.  Athletics is an educational endeavor, so participation in athletics at MWA should be aligned with MWA’s mission, vision, and values.  The goals of the athletics at MWA are to provide MWA students opportunities to participate in competitive team sports, learn valuable lessons regarding teamwork, discipline, and effort, and provide a fun and safe way to build school unity and spirit.  Athletics also allows students to experience the benefits of mentorship, coaching, and appropriate and positive relationships with adults.  The AD also ensures that the school's academic goals are not compromised in the pursuit of athletics.  AD duties also include background checks of coaches and trainers and adhering to annual training and safety drills that support the safety of students competing and practicing for their various sports.  Lastly, the AD is responsible for ensuring the MWA Upper School is in compliance with CA state law, CA Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and North Coast Section (NCS), Bay Area Conference (BAC), and Bay Counties League (BCL) rules and by-laws governing high school interscholastic athletics.  These duties include being the key liaison with external constituents such as CIF and NCS officials, Athletic Directors and coaches at other schools, MWA coaches, faculty, parents, and students.   The AD may also be asked to serve as part of the Principal’s leadership team and supervise the athletic trainer and assistant AD.

Primary Responsibilities

Program Compliance

  • Under the direction and supervision of the Principal of Making Waves Academy, ensure the MWA athletics program meets all obligations, requirements, and guidelines for membership, participation, and “good standing” in CIF, NCS, BAC, and BCL sanctioned competitions, including both in-season and out-of-season activities.
  • Oversee and work with coaches to ensure the scheduling of games and practices and ensure both activities meet MWA, MWA Athletic Department, and CIF standards for quality and quantity.
  • Work with MWA leadership to ensure MWA is proactively responding to challenges and concerns and implementing activities aligned with its mission and values.
  • Ensure all MWA students know and understand the expectations of participating in MWA Athletics, including minimum MWA and CIF GPA minimum standards, MWA discipline expectations, and practice and participation expectations (Student Athletic Participation Contract).  Also, ensure coaches understand all state, CIF, NCS, and league requirements for remaining in good standing as a coach in terms of behavior, compliance with MWA rules and requirements, and appropriate interactions with students, parents, staff, and fans, coaches, and players from other schools.
  • Ensure all MWA student-athletes know and understand the expectations and guidelines governing participation in college athletics.
Program Management
  • With support from the Principal and finance team, oversee and help develop resource allocation for proper management of athletic department activities, including but not limited to transportation, equipment purchases, coaches’ stipends, membership fees, field and/or building rentals, and paying for referees and umpires.
  • With the support of the Human Resources Department and Talent Team, recruit and onboard coaches for various MWA teams, emphasizing identifying MWA faculty and staff as potential coaches. 
  • Be a visible, active, and consistent presence at games and practices, and or make sure that all games have the AD, Assistant AD, or an administrator at all games and sanctioned competitions.
  • Oversee and develop regular professional development for coaches around sports-related information and developmental and character education.
  • Supervise, provide direction to,  develop, and evaluate the athletic trainer and provide some direction, training, support, and evaluation of the Assistant AD.
Communication
  • Manage the process that ensures game and practice schedules are clearly communicated to parents, students, and the larger school community using the Daily Bulletin, All School Meetings, and the Athletics Bulletin Board.
  • Participate in the new student induction programs, all school meetings, athletic team banquets, and Advisory programs.
  • Work with the Principal and Assistant Principals to oversee, develop, and manage an annual, formal performance evaluation system for all coaches.

  • Provide support to the middle school Athletics program.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal.
Work Environment
This job operates in an [office or classroom] environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, portable two-way radio transceivers, and smartphones.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to adhere to the following:
  • Frequently walk across the middle and upper school campus, or climb stairs.
  • Participate in campus supervision duty each week, Monday through Friday, and the frequency may vary based on each semester’s supervision assignment.
  • Lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool as necessary, and sit for long periods.
Travel
Some travel is required for MWA-related events, such as workshops or conferences.

Qualifications

Experience
  • Five or more years of teaching experience working in a high school setting
  • Experience as a high school coach and/or classroom teacher and demonstrated leadership experience (Head Coach, department head, division of a school)
  • Experience leading adult learning and professional development activities

Skills
  • Experience working with students and families from historically underserved communities
  • Highly effective communication skills
  • Ability to adapt and align with school-related initiatives
  • Highly organized, goal-oriented, and focused on outcomes
  • Ability to communicate with, teach, and build relationships with students and their families in the culturally and linguistically diverse MWA community
  • Demonstrate an understanding of technology and literacy learning platforms (PowerSchool, Canvas, Blackboard, Google Drive Calendar, etc.)
  • Professional orientation – appearance, communication, organization, and attitude

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Valid California Single or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential preferred but not required
  • CLAD/BCLAD

Licenses or Certificates Needed
  • Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis, and other employment clearance
  • CPR Training and Certification

Preferred but not required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Spanish language proficiency
