Division: School-Wide

Reports to: Director of Campus Operations (DCO)

Status: Full-time, Exempt (Year-Round)

Supervises: Custodians (2), Campus Operations & Safety Coordinator (1), Lead Campus Supervisor (1) & Campus Supervisors (7)

Salary: $100,000-$110,000  plus $12,000 Temporary Cost of Living Allowance and MWA Benefits 


Position Summary

The Manager of Campus Operations and Safety is responsible for executing day-to-day building operations, as well as the safety and security of the Making Waves Academy 20.25 acre campus (combined approximately 304,000 sq. ft).  The position requires a team leader with strong organizational skills, general knowledge of effective safety and security practices, and some knowledge of the essential elements of facility maintenance on a school campus. This person will oversee the custodial contract, coordination of space use, and the facility support, repair, and maintenance ticket system in partnership with MWA’s landlord. This person will also ensure that the school follows the local, state, and federal applicable codes, regulations, and standards pertaining to facility operations, safety and security.     

The Manager of Campus Operations and Safety is responsible for managing the team responsible for the maintenance and security of the campus, its staff, and the student body, including full-time custodial and campus supervision staff, full-time campus operations and safety coordinator, as well as any contractors/vendors as needed. They oversee safety and campus supervision, and implementation of security systems, including building access, and they interface with building occupants to maintain a safe and comfortable work environment.  Through their work, the Manager of Campus Operations and Safety will maintain a safe, secure, and comfortable environment conducive to student learning. 


Primary Responsibilities 

Leadership and Supervision 

  • Coordinate and supervise duties of the team, including the review and evaluation of work assignments such as daily campus supervision, timely attention to safety issues and projects, cleaning of all indoor and outdoor areas, and emergency cleanups for completion and compliance.
  • Implement and maintain a work order/capital forecast reporting system that generates routine reports to identify ongoing/persistent challenges and forecast needs/issues based on trends. 
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of outside contractors and vendors for crafts, such as custodial “night crew” and auto/golf cart mechanic, and inspect for completion of assignments by direct team members and by facility maintenance and repair contractors secured by MWA landlord to provide feedback.     
  • Forecast, allocate, and supervise the financial and physical resources of the custodial, safety, and facility management area.

Safety and Security

  • Identify major security, safety hazards, and major repair needs. Submit requests for deferred maintenance projects to the Director of Campus Operations and/or landlord for capital improvements and tenant improvement projects.
  • Develop a plan for 24-hour coverage for building usage, custodial, grounds, maintenance, safety, security, and emergencies.
  • Support the development and implementation of safety systems and response plans while collaborating closely with school administrators on the Cal/OSHA Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP), potentially including facilitating training sessions.
  • Oversee the supervision of school activities and facilities (e.g., security cameras, alarm systems, classrooms, buildings, and gates, as needed, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety of students, personnel, and property.
  • Manage and direct the work of the Campus Supervision team to ensure a safe, well-monitored school environment that is responsive to the needs of students and staff in both routine and urgent or emergency situations for all school-related activities and events.
  • Maintain inspection records, permits, construction documents, and internal facility audits.
  • Creates and oversees standard operating procedures to open, run, and close the campus. 
  • Oversee building keying system and master keying record of all keys issued to and retrieved from employees.
  • Drive collaboration between Campus Supervisors, Deans of Students, Social Workers, School Leaders, and other community members to foster clear and timely communication, ensure consistent incident responses, and strategically address unsafe and unacceptable student behaviors.

Oversight and Maintenance of Facilities

  • Assist in or coordinate preventive maintenance, including the overall planning and decision-making for maintaining the facility's safety, utility, and appearance, in partnership with MWA’s landlord, as applicable.
  • Manage and oversee the HVAC Energy Management System, as well as door/gate closure schedules.
  • Manage the facility support, repair, and maintenance ticket system in partnership with MWA’s landlord.
  • Partner with the DCO to manage space usage and assignments and lead the coordination of office and classroom moves.
  • Oversee night custodial contract and custodial supplies and equipment to maintain an appropriate inventory level.
  • Oversees master storage plan for the campus and oversees inventory maintenance and location of stored items.

Work Environment

This job operates in an indoor and outdoor environment. 


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to frequently walk or drive a golf cart across the middle and upper school campus, work in an outdoor environment under various weather conditions, be on their feet for up to 8 hours, participate in campus supervision duty each week, lift boxes up to fifty (50) lbs., and bend or stand for long periods of time.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years experience in safety and security required, preferably in a school environment.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in coordination of building maintenance and custodial work required.
  • 3-5 years of experience supervising employees, with a track record of effective team leadership and management. 
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience managing complex projects, demonstrating strong organizational and execution skills.
  • Knowledge of environmental and safety rules, regulations, and policies; ability to conduct job site inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and requirements and maintenance of a safe work and learning environment.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, equipment, and supplies used in facility maintenance and safety regulations, including preventive maintenance

Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams, processes, systems, and contractors effectively
  • Proficiency in using facility management software, computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required 

Licenses or Certificates Needed

  • Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis, and/or other employment clearance

Preferred but not required

  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Experience in a school environment
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, equipment, and supplies used in facility maintenance and safety regulations, including preventive maintenance
  • OSHA-certified LIFTS
  • Preferred working knowledge of playground safety and guidelines set by California’s Division of State Architect (DSA)
  • Advanced degree
